10 Fall Fashion Trends 2024: Cozy, Chic, Cool (and Wearable)
Fall decor is out in all the stores now. As I write this, I’m burning my first pumpkin-scented candle of the season, and pumpkin spice is officially back in Starbucks as of today, August 22. It may still be over 100 degrees outside, but I’m ready say goodbye to tired sundresses, and embrace the most exciting fashion season of all—fall.
The runway collections for this season were all over the place, but still included some very wearable, classic, fall looks. What I love the most about this season’s trends is the exciting use of contrast. Think pairing a light, silky, cami top with an edgy, studded, moto jacket. Patterns are going bold too. Plaid and leopard print coming to the party together. This season is all about being cozy, chic, classy, and cool. Here are some of the top fall fashion trends for 2024. It’s worth noting, this list is not exhaustive. However, this list features some trends most seen on the runway, as well as some of the more wearable, classic, fall looks. Let’s jump in!

1. Moto Jackets: The Ultimate Piece
First up, we’re kicking things off with the leather moto jacket —the ultimate sexy, badass layering piece. It’s the perfect blend of edgy and chic, giving that “I could drink an old fashioned, but I’d also love an oat milk latte” vibe. Layer it over a chunky sweater, or silky, lingerie style top (more on this later), and you’ll be ready to rock, while looking effortlessly cool. Seriously, this jacket can pull together, give personality to, and elevate any look. Plus they’re functional, offering good temperature regulation without all the bulk. Prada and Hermès showed cropped leather jackets in their fall 2024 collection. Looks like the moto jacket continues to be the perfect transitional jacket this season. While for me, a leather moto jacket is always a perfect go-to jacket, kind of like a pair of classic Ray Bans.

2. Leopard Print: A Great Neutral
Speaking of classic fashion favorites, let’s talk about the queen of all prints: leopard. Leopard print will always be in the mix for me. Leopard simultaneously gives vintage vibes with edge, glam, and even campiness. Yet, it also works as a neutral. No rules here. So feel free to get wild with it. Mix and match it with other prints and colors. Plaid and leopard print even hit the runway together, giving a preppy-edgy cool look this season. Whether you prefer a luxurious leopard print coat or a flirty dress, you can’t go wrong with this timeless classic. This print was spotted on the catwalk in Christian Dior, Marni, Michael Kors, and Alexander McQueen’s collections.
3. Lingerie Looks: Sugar & Spice
This fall, we’re bringing lace and silk out of the bedroom and into the spotlight. Think silky slip dress layered under a chunky sweaters, or a lacey bralette peeking out from beneath a tailored blazer. Perhaps a pair of beautiful thigh-high stockings that occasionally peek out from under an elegant skirt or dress. It’s a playful nod to your inner seductress while keeping it classy. Again, you also see the contrast between pairings in these looks. You could make this style very femme fatale, or more girly and sweet. As a lover of vintage, lingerie, old-school glamor, and burlesque, I am all over this look. Pair with a red lip for a maximum impact.
4. Brown Leather Boots: The Fall Essential
Next up, let’s give it up for brown leather boots — the quintessential fall footwear. When you don’t know what to wear to Thanksgiving dinner, pair practically anything with brown leather boots and you’re set. These babies are versatile enough to go with just about anything, from your a flirty leopard print skirt to a cozy chunky sweaters. Whether you go for ankle, knee-high, or even combat styles, brown boots are here to keep your feet warm while ensuring you strut through the season like the cozy fashionista you are. Scrunched leather boots are going to be added to a lot of our carts this season as well.
5. Chunky Sweaters: Cozy Chic
Speaking of cozy, chunky sweaters are a must have. I love how a good chunky sweater can simultaneously make you feel so warm and cozy, while looking a bit more sexy and put together than just a sweatshirt. These oversized wonders are not only perfect for snuggling up with a good book, or a binge of Gilmore Girls, but they also make for an effortlessly chic look. Pair one with your favorite faux leather leggings and scrunched boots, and you’re giving all the cozy-girl fall vibes.
6. Preppy Style:
Get ready to channel your inner Gossip Girl because preppy style is stepping out this fall. Think tailored coats, blazers, pleated skirts, and structured bags that make you look like you just strolled off the campus of an elite university. Pair a fitted blazer with a black turtleneck a some well-fitted skirt for a polished, yet functional look. Combine two of this seasons looks and add something plaid to the mix. Plaid scarves are perfect and so versatile.
7. Boho Style:
We have both ends of the Gossip Girl fashion spectrum this season. In contrast to the polished, preppy Blair style, we’ll also see more free-flowing boho vibes for you Serena types out there. Think earthy tones and loose, flowing fabric, and floppy hats. Channel your inner hippie, like you could be twirling around at a Dave Matthew’s concert somewhere. Maxi skirts, knit scarves, and vests layered on top of each other for a free-spirited look. Vests are seemingly in this season, for those who can confidently rock a vest.
8. Faux Fur: Faux Sure
Let’s talk about faux fur — the fabulous texture that adds instant luxe to any outfit. Whether you opt for a fabulous faux fur coat, scarf, or vest, this trend is perfect for those fall days when you want to look like effortlessly glam, even when it’s nippy outside. Faux fur coats, scarves, stoles, lined gloves, and boots. This cozy, versatile, fashion favorite can be sprinkled in to add a little extra touch of luxury.
9. 1960s Vibes: Get Your Retro On
Dust off your go-go boots, and channel your inner Janis Joplin because the 1960s are making a fierce comeback this fall. Think A-line skirts, mod prints, and bold colors. Pair with some bold lashes, or glasses, and you’re ready to go thrift some vintage vinyl. Plus, here’s another opportunity to wear your brown boots! This vintage vibe was notably seen in Marc Jacobs’ collection this season.
10. Colors of the Season: Butter Yellow & Dark Cherry
As I was scouring the internet looking at various fall fashion trends, butter yellow was coming up everywhere. A soft, lovely, pale yellow dominating the color pallet, and switching it up from the typical orange, brown, red, and jewel tones of the season. However, an import thing to consider when it comes to color is what season are you? The concept of “color seasons” comes from a theory in the fashion and beauty industry to categorize individuals based on their skin tone, hair color, and eye color. Some colors will naturally compliment and some may clash. This theory became popularized by Carole Jackson in her book, “Color Me Beautiful.” She categorized people into one of the four seasons: Winter, spring, summer, or autumn, each with their own color palette deemed most flattering. I’m a winter, so butter yellow is not a good look for me. It’s not great for my autumn girlies either. This color works best on spring and some summer individuals.

Dark Cherry Red
On the other hand, dark cherry red looks sensational winters, and can be great on autumns too. Winters as you might guess have cool undertones, and are flattered by reds, and jeweled tones. Think Lana Del Rey. Autumns may prefer more warm-toned reds, based on the individual, but can definitely rock this signature femme fatale fave. Beyonce could be considered an autumn, along with Adele, and Nicole Kidman. Pops of this sultry color look beautiful on shoes, purses, gloves, accessories of all sorts, and makeup too.
