Fall Hygge: Your Guide to the Danish Art of Cozy Living

October 11, 2024

Welcome to Fall Hygge, where my love for all things cozy gets to shine. If there’s one thing I adore more than a comfy blanket, it’s creating a space that feels like a warm hug on a cold, harsh day. So, if you’re ready to transform your home into the ultimate snuggly sanctuary, let’s dive into the magical world of hygge—where cozy isn’t just a vibe; it’s a lifestyle. Let’s get started!

The Origins of Hygge: A Warm Welcome

Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) originates from a Danish word that means ‘well-being.’ It’s not just a word; it’s a lifestyle steeped in the art of coziness and contentment. The Happiness Institute in Denmark has studied hygge extensively, research has shown that the Danes are among the happiest people in the world. But why, and what can we learn from them?

One important secret lies in their ability to savor the simple pleasures of life—creating warm atmospheres that foster connection and joy. So, as we settle in for fall let’s take a cue from the Danes and explore how to bring the joy of hygge into our everyday lives.

So What Exactly is Hygge?

Simply put, hygge is about creating a sense of comfort and well-being. It’s a holistic approach that emphasizes atmosphere, presence, pleasure, and togetherness. Think of it as a warm blanket for your soul, swaddling you in safety, and encouraging you to slow down and appreciate the cozy moments life has to offer.

How to Create Hygge in Your Daily Life: Top 10 Tips

1. Atmosphere & Lightning

Ever wondered what it’s like to watch a vampire stroll into the sun, squirm in agony, and then go up in flames? Just plop me down for dinner under those grim, clinical, high-efficiency LED lights—or any fluorescent nightmare—and you’ll witness it firsthand!

There is a hygge sweet spot when it comes to lighting, which for the Danes is a science, an art, and an industry.

When Danes are asked what they most associate with hygge, an overwhelming 85% said candles. Do yourself (and your light-sensitive loved ones) a favor and illuminate your space with soft, dispersed, and even flickering light. Turn off the harsh overhead lights, so nobody feels like they’re being interrogated, and let the soothing glow of candles create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Worried about fire hazards? 2. Presence

In a society filled with constant distractions, embrace the philosophy of mindfulness, and “be here now.” Put down your phone, make eye contact, listen, and engage in some thoughtful conversation. Listening has become a rare talent these days, but if you can master the art of truly hearing others, you’re giving them a priceless gift.

Perhaps you’re spending some time relaxing and luxuriating in your own presence. Why not take time to slow down, and enjoy a moment of silence with a cup of your favorite tea. Add a pastry on the side for even more hygge goodness.

3. Indulge in Pleasures

Nothing says hygge like a little indulgence. Treat yourself to some gourmet chocolate, freshly brewed coffee, or a something out of the pastry display. Go ahead and get that cranberry bliss bar with your latte. These small pleasures enhance the cozy experience. Worried about calories? Burn it off later with a nature walk, or a bike ride.

4. “We” Vocabulary

The Danish mentality is greatly focused on equality. It’s about “we over me”. Whether you’re hosting a dinner or a game night, foster an environment where everyone feels equal and valued. How? Talk to everyone. Listen, and engage with a spirit of interest and curiosity.

5. Cultivate Gratitude

Take a moment each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. Keeping a gratitude journal has been shown to have numerous benefits, including reduced symptoms of depression and increased overall happiness By regularly reflecting on what we’re thankful for, we can shift our focus from what’s lacking in our lives to the abundance we already have, leading to improved mental well-being and a greater sense of fulfillment.

6. Harmony

Create a space that feels balanced and serene. One thing hygge homes all have is a “Hyggekrog” which roughly translates to “a nook”. It’s that place in the room you want to snuggle up with a blanket and read, or lay your head down while you binge watching Gilmore Girls.

Hygge is about soothing colors, soft textures, and harmonious decor to cultivate a peaceful environment. Also, think about ways to bring nature inside. Plants. Flowers. Pumpkins. Pine cones. Whatever reflects the season. The Danes are also very big on wood furnishings, which give a natural feeling of warmth.

7. Get Comfy

Comfort is at the heart of hygge. So snuggle up in your coziest blankey, wear those fuzzy socks, and don’t hesitate to pull on your favorite oversized sweater. As I was researching this subject I came across a term that I was surprised and delighted to learn existed, and sums this up perfectly. The word of the day is…

Hyggebukser (hoogabucksr):

“That one pair of pants you would never wear in public, but are so comfortable that they are likely to be, secretly, your favorites.”

They probably have a hole, a stain, or the word Juicy faded across the butt, but hey, they’re hygge!

8. Keeping the Peace

Leave the drama and politics at the door. Seriously. Save it for the right time and place. Hygge is about fostering peace and tranquility, so try to provide a drama-free zone in your home. Particularly when hosting guests.

9. Emphasize Togetherness

Build relationships and narratives with your loved ones. Pull out the photos albums and old pictures. Teach the younger generation about where they came from. Tell them about their ancestors. Share stories, reminisce, and create new memories together. “Remember that time we…” is a great conversation starter!

10. Creating Sacred Space

Think of your home as your sanctuary—a safe space where you can feel secure and at peace. Surround yourself with items that, as Marie Kondo would say, “spark joy”—books, artwork, vintage treasures, whatever items that reflect your personality and make you feel good.

Nature and Connection

As we embrace the fall season, let’s not forget about the great outdoors. Go for a bike ride, nature walk through the colorful foliage, make a fire, or have a cozy movie night under the stars. Nature has a way of grounding us, reminding us of life’s simple joys.

In conclusion, hygge isn’t just about creating a cozy space; it’s about nurturing a mindset that prioritizes our well-being and that of our loved ones—like a warm, fuzzy blanket for the soul. It’s the art of making every day feel like a Saturday morning, complete with hot cocoa and no alarm set. So, grab your blankey, dim the lights, and let’s embrace this enlightened philosophy—because if we can’t find joy in a perfect pile of pillows, what are we even doing? Here’s to keeping it cozy!
